"I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being."
- Oscar Wilde
When one thinks of community theatre, the image of painted sets in a church social hall or a local event center. As the foyer lights flash to signal the start of the show, seats are taken and talented people entertain for an hour and a half.
Community Theatre is unique.
Most theatrical experiences are in larger cities with more resources. The experience is special. In a time where many are facing economic struggle, entertainment is largely considered a luxury. Ticket prices are only one aspect to consider, which is why they must be taken advantage of when affordable. Travel expenses, food, and hotels make the ability to see theatrical performances a "once in a while" activity. It is however, an unforgettable, magical experience. Countless people work together to bring stories to life. We see what's on stage, but several are making it happen backstage, administratively, and in the front of house. The talent witnessed in the acting, the beauty of the set design, and the immersive effects of lighting and sound captivate audiences in ways that make them keep coming back. Good theatre is the reason for success in amusement parks, escape rooms, and guided tours.
So if high caliber performances exist, why bother with community productions on a budget?
The community in community theatre brings its own magic. The story is still there with the beloved songs and characters in tow. The difference is when the leading man singing the show's ballad is also a local barber or when the kids on the third row are whispering "When is Grandma going to be on stage?"; when the honey pot that Winnie-the-Pooh is holding is the vintage ice bucket someone in the crowd's roommate was asked to borrow or when a local business allowed use of their products in the show in exchange for an ad in the program. The community aspect allows for people who love to act and never thought they'd have the opportunity to bring their craft to life.
Community Theatre provides an (often times free) outlet for arts, entertainment, supplemental education, and well... community. Almost every talent can be utilized for the show whether that's backstage, on stage, or in the front of house. It's a great way for everyone to feel needed and important. It's a great way to learn new things and develop new skills like woodworking, sewing, yodeling, or even light and sound design. The plays produced often open up an avenue for students to understand the stories they've been reading class. Bringing Shakespeare to life makes reading what was written on the page much easier to comprehend, especially when it's entertaining. It's an accessible and affordable way to spend an evening. The energy of live performance make them feel like special occasions, which is why many chose to dress up or go to dinner before or after. Getting to support something that benefits the community makes you feel good about where you've spent your time and money.
As The Connection Theatre nears the opening of its up and coming production, it hopes Hinesville and the surrounding areas will treat themselves to a night of whimsy and spectacle as we bring the story of Winnie-The-Pooh to life.
